John Deere round balers R and M: two Steps Ahead

The new variable chamber John Deere round balers of the “R” and “M” series are designed to guarantee maximum baling density and increased hourly productivity through innovative functional solutions and more advanced connectivity systems

Maximum baling density. To store large amounts of forage in limited spaces while also protecting the crop from potential damage caused by weather, fermentation, mold, and bacteria—this is the primary design goal of all round baler manufacturers. An ambitious goal, and one that is difficult to achieve in absolute terms, since the same crop often undergoes different harvesting and processing methods depending on its type and intended use.

It is no coincidence that the market offers both fixed-chamber and variable-chamber balers: the former work with pressures that increase as bale diameter grows, while the latter apply constant pressure on the forage throughout the entire wrapping process. As a result, fixed-chamber balers produce bales that become denser as they form but start with a relatively soft core, whereas variable-chamber models deliver maximum density from the very first stages of baling.

This dichotomy can only be overcome with equipment capable of combining the strengths of fixed-chamber machines with the features of variable-chamber models, adjusting bale core density to match harvesting conditions and the crop’s intended use. That is precisely what the new John Deere variable-chamber balers of the “R” and “M” series aim to provide: four models designed to boost hourly productivity through advanced connectivity systems—targeting larger, highly structured farms and contractors (the “R” series) as well as medium and small mixed farms (the “M” series).

The latter, in particular, feature a compact design that allows them to be used in fields with limited maneuvering space and on sloping terrain. In such conditions, the new “V452M” and “V462M” models can also handle intensive harvesting cycles, thanks to a 10% increase in transmission power, which translates into an 8% rise in productivity under the same workload compared to the previous generation.

New jointless belts with a rough surface ensure smooth and continuous crop feeding even when the forage is damp, while the hydraulically operated knife engagement system, activated directly from the cab, guarantees uniform and precise cutting under any working conditions. All harvesting parameters can also be monitored via the “G5e” touchscreen display, which, thanks to ISOBUS compatibility, integrates operational data into the “John Deere Operations Center.”

This makes it possible both to fully trace the work cycle and to store all relevant information for invoicing purposes—particularly useful for contractors, who will find the more advanced “V452R” and “V462R” models ideal for completing numerous harvesting cycles quickly.

The “R” series models, in fact, deliver 8% higher hourly productivity than their predecessors, thanks to a 15% increase in transmission power.

Their capabilities are further enhanced by the “Windrow Tracking Automation” function, which, through a flexible drawbar, allows the baler to automatically follow the swath—steering left and right according to chamber filling, even on curved windrows—thus ensuring uniform final bales.

High-density baling is achieved through a dual-belt system that compresses forage up to 140 kg per cubic meter, 7% more than the previous generation, while the rapid-release function allows the bale to be unloaded in the field and the tailgate closed in just three seconds.

Focus on Quality

The production of high-quality silage is the goal of the new combined balers “C442R,” “C452R,” and “C462R,” which integrate a wrapping arm operating at 40 rpm to deliver perfectly sealed bales, preserving the crop’s organoleptic properties. Productivity quality is further enhanced by the option of equipping the machines with an integrated weighing system. Using force sensors placed on each of the four rollers of the transfer table, this system enables the weight of every single bale to be checked and certified.
